Accessible parking

How many ADA accessible spaces does a Florida lot need?

Enter the number of spaces in a parking lot or garage. We work out the accessible and van-accessible spaces the ADA Standards and Florida law require, and the Florida markings that go with them.

What Florida requires on the ground

  • Each accessible space at least 12 feet wide, with an access aisle at least 5 feet wide that is part of the accessible route to the entrance.
  • The access aisle striped diagonally as a no-parking zone.
  • The space outlined in blue paint, and repainted when needed.
  • A permanent sign, at least 60 inches from the ground to the bottom of the sign, with the international symbol of accessibility and the caption "PARKING BY DISABLED PERMIT ONLY"; signs put up after October 1, 1996 must show the penalty.
  • Van spaces also need the words "van accessible" on the sign.

Federal minimums are narrower (96 inches for a car space, 132 inches for a van space); in Florida the 12-foot width applies, because the statute keeps the stricter rule.

Count each lot or garage on a site separately; the number is not based on all the spaces on the site together.
